My Top 7 Natural Cold Remedies

I have had a weak immune system for as long as I can remember. Changing my diet to focus on whole foods has helped me to strengthen my immune system and has made my body much less susceptible to catching colds.

This week my stress and lack of sleep has finally gotten the best of me and what do you know, I caught the cold that's been going around. When I catch the occasional sniffles, these are the natural cold remedies that I live by. It's also a great idea to follow these tips for cold prevention!

My Top 7 Natural Cold Remedies

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
Viruses like the common cold can put the body into an overly acidic state, making it difficult for the body to fight infection. ACV has powerful alkaline properties that can help prevent and shorten the common cold. ACV has also been shown to reduce mucus production, which will help to make you feel so much better during a time with the sniffles! I like to mix 1-2 tablespoons of ACV with hot water, lemon juice and a few drops of honey. I usually drink this when I first wake up in the morning.

Increasing your probiotic intake will help strengthen your immune system to prevent and fight infection. It's important to incorporate raw probiotic rich foods like kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, dairy-free yogurt into your routine, but you should also take a regular probiotic supplement. I currently do not do this and need to start! I've been researching probiotic supplements and would love your recommendations!

Vitamin C
This one goes without saying! Vitamin C is a powerful immune booster. You can always take a Vitamin C supplement, but the best way to get this antioxidant is by eating healthy whole foods. Eat an orange in the morning, make a Vitamin C rich smoothie, or sip on lemon water throughout the day.

You've heard me rave about how much I adore this golden spice in my cooking. Tumeric is well known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It's also an extremely effective natural pain reliever. Have a head cold with sinus pressure, aches and pains? This is your friend! My favorite way to enjoy this spice is in a creamy turmeric spiced smoothie. I'll have to share my recipe with you soon!

Another powerful real food healer loaded with anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger can help sooth upset stomachs and helps to warm the body to expel toxins. I like to peel, chop and freeze fresh ginger to throw into smoothies whenever needed. I also love to enjoy turmeric tea. My favorite is brand of ginger tea is by Yogi.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a powerful natural antiviral. Take a tablespoon straight, swirl into your morning tea or coffee, or blend into your smoothie.

Oil of Oregano
I saved the best for last! I swear by this stuff! The natural properties found in oregano oil can help prevent viruses and heal your body of viruses that have already taken attack. Using the dropper in the bottle, I squeeze a dropper full into the back of my throat and swish around. Or, you can mix a dropper full into a cup of water. Warning - This stuff is STRONG, but trust me you will be thankful you tried it!

What is your favorite probiotic supplement?
Have you tried any of these natural cold remedies?
